A.L Hammonds was born in Bilston, West Midlands, England and grew up surrounded by engineering and industry, his father ran a Shire horse based haulage business. It is from these beginnings that formed the foundations for his artwork and attention to detail. For example, a drawing of a steam locomotive will look like an exact scaled down version of the original. He could produce a picture of photographic quality, using oils, pastels, conté crayon, charcoal, pencil or ink. He studied at the Royal College Of Art, London and then lectured at Halesowen College, and finally as the Head of Fine Art at Bournville College of Art. His varied work has been exhibited throughout the UK, Austria & Germany, and has been featured on UK radio, as well as television, newspapers, magazines & books in the UK, Austria, Germany & Switzerland.
